Dream time, acrylic on canvas, 30 x 30 cm
The initial inspiration for this exhibition came from my 2010 visit to the recently rebuilt Neues Museum in Berlin. David Chipperfield, the architect kept a sympathetic and delicate balance between the new and the old giving a beautiful timelessness to the fabric of the building. I was very impressed with his use of multilayering and acknowledgement of past, present and future time and have incorporated this understanding in these new works”.
In a mixture of paintings and mixed media assemblages and collages, Shirley Clancy's clear and magical realism style takes the viewer into a consciousness of universal myths and stories. In these altered realities, highly detailed settings are invaded by things too strange for the rational mind to acknowledge, but all too familiar in the world of dreams. With a seductive charm, and allusions to iconic paintings and figures of the past, they invite the viewer to interpret his or her own individual fantasies. current/main.htm
