Regent (Taewongun) and father of  King Kojong – deposed in 1873 but reinstated in the Kabo Reforms of 1894. The Reforms, promoted by the Japanese to form a pro-Japanese government, collapsed two years later and King Kojong fled to the protection of the Russian legation..
