Image depicts the women’s brigade of rebels fighting at Kagoshima during the Satsuma Rebellion. The women are fighting fiercely in hand-to-hand combat with the Imperial Army troops, wielding naginata and swords as they battle bravely against the enemy. At left, rebel leader Saigo Takamori sits on horseback surveying the fight, wearing a black military uniform and plumed cap, surrounded by rebel samurai. A fantastic and rare scene of women in combat. Great expressive figures, nicely detailed.
