Intriguing portrait of the Meiji Emperor and Empress surrounded by a group of government officials and dignitaries, and several palace ladies-in-waiting. The rulers are shown at top centre, the emperor in military uniform and the empress wearing an unusual headdress or crown. The three men just below them are traditionally dressed in formal robes and court caps, while the rest wear uniforms decorated with sashes and medals. The men in the front row sit in chairs, with a beauty kneeling in the centre. Purple draperies with the Meiji chrysanthemum crest frame the scene above walls decorated with cranes flying above waves. Beautifully detailed with burnishing in the black uniforms, a burnished pattern in the purple court robes, and embossing in the white kimono trim.
