A six-panel print depicting the funeral procession of the Meiji Emperor in 1912. Shinto priests in pale blue robes and tall black caps lead the way, followed by military officers in dress uniforms, their chests covered with ribbons and medals. An elegant royal cart drawn by oxen carries the Emperor’s body, with more officers, nobles, and priests stretching out behind and disappearing into the distance. At right, a Japanese flag is framed by yellow and white chrysanthemums, the emblem of the Meiji reign, and a bright fire burns atop a wooden tripod at left. A wonderfully detailed illustration of this historic event, rarely found complete in six panels, and crisp clean printing
